一、改革开放30年，焦炭产量迅猛增长，中国焦炭产量已占世界60%。
改革开放30年，中国炼焦行业辉煌发展30年。焦炭产量由1978年4689万吨到2007年上升到33553万吨，增长6.16倍。焦炭主要供给钢铁工业,钢产量由1978年3178万吨到2007年达到48924万吨。2007年当年增产钢6822万吨，焦炭增产4277万吨。
回顾改革开放前几年，钢铁产量迟迟不前，1975-1977年连续三年将钢产量计划列入2600万吨，(1974年钢产量2112万吨)但都没有完成任务，这就成为冶金史上“三打2600”完不成钢铁计划任务的三年，三年钢仅增加262万吨，2007年一年增产钢6822万吨，是革开放前三年增产钢的26倍，同期焦炭产量增产14倍。充分说明改革开放以来，炼焦行业取得巨大的成绩。
改革开放30年，钢铁产量大发展，拉动焦炭迅速增长，九月份出现经济下滑的情况，预计2008年焦炭产量31000万吨左右,比1978年增长6倍。改革开放30年来，中国焦炭产量突出增长的情况。
1979-1988年第一个10年焦炭产量增长30.2%，
1989-1998年第二个10年焦炭产量增长1.27倍，
1999-2008年第三个10年焦炭产量增长5.11倍，
尤其是进入21世纪，焦炭产量平均每年增产2200万吨。
2007年统计在册的997家焦化企业分布大陆29个省市区，生产焦炭33553万吨。产焦炭100万吨以上的焦化企业有72家，合计焦炭产量13844万吨，占全国焦炭产量45.35%，如鞍钢焦炭产量634万吨、宝钢550万吨、武钢432万吨、包钢415万吨等。
中国炼焦行业辉煌发展30年，2007年焦炭产量达33553万吨，是世界产焦炭第一大国，占世界焦炭产量60%。
世界的焦炭产量增长主要是中国
近10年来，世界焦炭产量由1997年的35999万吨到2007年增长到56100万吨，增长55.84%，其中,中国增长54.59%;世界其它国家仅增长1.25%，其中俄罗斯增长2.2%、印度增长1.98%、乌克兰增长1.09%等，日、美、德发达国家焦炭产量不但没有增加，反而有不同程度的减产90-270万吨。这里面也有国家发展到一定阶段，焦化生产环境污染，焦炭产量受到控制的因素。
2007年世界焦炭产量56100万吨，世界焦炭产量增长是随着中国的焦炭产量增加而增长。世界、中国焦炭产量增长情况.
2007年世界产焦炭10大国家：
中国33553万吨，占60%；日本3870.7万吨，占6.9%；俄罗斯3198.5万吨，占5.7%；乌克兰1940.8万吨，占3.46%；印度1959万吨，占3.49%；美国1620.1万吨,占2.89%;波兰1026.5万吨，占1.83%。韩国994万吨，占1.77%；巴西853万吨，占1.52%；德国810万吨，占1.44%。
世界产焦炭十大国家的焦炭产量合计为49813.4万吨,占世界焦炭产量88.8%。世界产焦炭十大国家以及钢铁产量情况。
改革开放30年，中国炼焦行业辉煌发展30年，预计2008年焦炭产量35000万吨左右，中国的焦炭产量是神奇的产量数字，可以预略，古今中外以及今后几百年，世界任何国家都无条件，无能力，也不可能生产35000万吨焦炭，只有伟大的中国在改革开放经济快速发展的形势下，才有能力生产35000万吨焦炭。改革开放30年，炼焦行业取得巨大的成绩。但是，也要看到，这是发展中国家，经济发展中的焦炭产量，中国过了建设高峰期，焦炭产量也要降下来。
二、炼焦行业生产的焦炭，为国民经济发展做出了巨大贡献
2007年中国焦炭产量33553万吨，其中出口焦炭1530万吨，国内的焦炭32023万吨，供给国民经济各个行业。
焦炭主要保证钢铁工业生产的需要，同时也满足了化学工业、有色工业、机械工业等国民经济各个行业生产和生活的需要
根据2007年国家统计局统计，全国消费焦炭30336.64万吨(统计不全),各个行业消费的焦炭：
1、2007年钢铁产量大幅度的增长，钢达到48924万吨。钢铁工业消费焦炭25786.95万吨,占85%(实际87%左右)
其中高炉生产生铁46944万吨，消费焦炭20902万吨，占钢铁工业消费焦炭的81.06%；炼铁烧结矿的燃料用焦粉约2050万吨;生产铁合金用焦炭1600万吨；生产普通镁砂用焦炭约180万吨；高铝钒土生产，用焦炭约80万吨；另外，机修、烧白灰、矿山等用焦炭999.95万吨。
除了钢铁工业外，国民经济各行业消费焦炭4550万吨,占15%
2、有色工业消费焦炭471万吨,占全国消费量的1.55%；
3、化学工业消费焦炭2219万吨,占7.32%，
其中生产电石1482万吨用焦炭约890万吨；生产化肥用焦炭约150万吨；黄磷、机修、其他等用焦炭1179万吨；
4、机械工业消费焦炭787.14万吨,占2.59%；
5、化纤、非金属制品消费焦炭320万吨，占1.05%；
6、生活消费焦炭76万吨,占0.25%；
7、其他行业如采掘业、交通、电力、农业、纺织、生活用品等消费焦炭676万吨，占2.23%。
现在机焦能力近4亿吨，可以满足生产钢7亿吨和其他各个行业的需要。
三、按照科学发展观，推进炼焦产业结构化升级，焦炉走向大型化、现代化。
改革开放前的焦炉设备比较简易，1978年底机焦炉仅有201座，能力3735万吨。5.5米大焦炉仅有攀钢4座，能力144万吨,占3.85%;
碳化室高4.3米焦炉75座,能力3055万吨，占81.8%;
66型等小焦炉122座，能力536万吨，占14.35%。
炼焦装备水平低，配煤靠称盘检斤计算配煤比，炼焦炉的四大车运行靠吹口哨指挥协调等
1978年改革开放了，人们思想解放了，改变了观念，破除旧框框，激励国民经济快速发展，拉动炼焦行业迅速增长。机焦炉能力由1978年的3735万吨，到2007年底增长到38567万吨(初核)，比1978年增加10.33倍,其中6米焦炉，到目前增加到153座，能力8567万吨、约占机焦能力22%。
4.3米焦炉能力25313万吨，比1978年增加22258万吨，
4.3米以下小型焦炉，经过近几年淘汰后，能力还有5000多万吨，
特别是进入21世纪的8年半时间里，建设投产的大型机焦炉422座，能力16820万吨。详见表1
其中7.63焦炉，投产9座,能力990万吨,7米焦炉投产8座,能力760万吨；6米以上(含6米炉)的大型机焦炉113座，能力5783万吨。
近期，为扩大炼焦煤资源，建设一批4.3米的捣固焦炉，设计院开发5.5米捣固焦炉9座投产,能力450万吨;6.25米的捣固焦炉在建设中。
中国炼焦行业在发展中也出现一些问题，钢铁工业快速发展到1996年钢产量达到1亿吨时，机焦产量突出不足，一些产煤地区大量生产土焦，改良焦，供给钢铁生产的需要，1987年土焦产量最高峰达6728万吨，占焦炭产量48.4%。一些产煤地区铺天盖地生产土焦、改良焦，造成白天烟雾茫茫，晚上灯火辉煌，严重污染环境的局面，炼焦行业发展受到严重损害。
针对土焦生产污染环境，浪费能源的问题，有关单位及时提出淘汰土焦、改良焦的建议，国家主管部门三次下达淘汰土焦、改良焦的文件，经各个地区共同努力下，淘汰土焦取得很好的效果。
2004年国家主管部门，对炼焦行业土焦生产和低水平的重复建设，制定了一系列调控措施，要求各地区继续淘汰土焦、改良焦和落后的小机焦，到目前,先后关闭土焦6000多万吨，小机焦关闭3000多万吨。
按照科学发展观，推动炼焦产业结构化升级，2005年国家主管部门发布了“焦化行业准入条件”，对炼焦企业的工艺、技术、装备、规模、能源、环保综合利用等方面，提出更高的标准要求，焦化厂的焦炉碳化室高4.3米以上，检查反应釜面板和后板上的可动部件和固定接点是否正常，抽开导热油炉|反应釜上盖，检查接插件接触是否松动，是否有因运输和保管不善而造成的损坏或锈蚀。导热油炉控制器应可靠接地。连接好所有导线，包括电源线、控制器与导热油炉|反应釜的电炉线、电机线及温度传感器和测速器导线。将面板上“电源”空气总开关合上，数显表应有显示。在数显表上设定好各种参数（如上限报警温度、工作温度等）然后，按下“加热”开关生产能力60万吨以上，煤气和化工产品必需全部回收和加工利用，废水进行生化处理等等，这样，推动企业淘汰落后生产设备,积极创造条件，争取达到“焦化行业准入条件”标准。现已公告符合准入条件的生产企业140家，几乎都是大中型骨干企业,总生产能力1.6亿吨，约占全国焦化生产能力45%左右。
现在一批大中型焦化企业的装备达到世界较先进水平，如炼焦配煤自动化，炼焦炉的四大车按装红外线对位、炉号识别，推焦联锁，装煤车自动走行，推焦过程监视的自动化及焦炉自动化控制，还配备装煤、推焦除尘设置，干熄焦设备等。煤气净化设备、苯加氢生产工艺、30万吨煤焦油加工设备都是比较先进生产工艺，环保设施不断升级。企业管理上升了新台阶，厂区环境走向园林化，炼焦企业向大型规模化、现代化方向迈进。
四、落实科学发展观，炼焦行业科技创新不断发展
1、用焦炉煤气生产甲醇，是焦化行业创新的杰出项目，具有深远的重大意义。甲醇可代替汽油，又是化工的重要原料。
通常的焦炉煤气都是做工业燃料、民用煤气和发电等。2004年12月云南曲靖大为焦化制供气有限公司,创新的用焦炉煤气生产甲醇投入生产，这是国内外首创第一家，生产工艺成熟，产品质量好，经济效益佳。
随后河北建滔、旭阳、山东海化、山西潞宝等一批生产甲醇企业陆续投产，到目前已有16家企业投入生产，能力达到210万吨。2007年生产甲醇37万吨。目前，利用焦炉煤气生产甲醇，在建、拟建的还有13家，能力237万吨。
近年中国生产的石油还满足不了国民经济发展的需要，每年进口石油约占50%。国内汽车在高速发展，今年的汽车产量可能达1000万辆，使汽油更加紧张。炼焦行业为了缓解国家石油紧缺，利用焦炉煤气生产甲醇代替汽油，汽油掺入10-15%甲醇，汽车照常使用。
